Lajja Gauri

A Fertility Goddess

EN :The sculpture Lajja Gauri is an amber-coloured glass cast, a vessel, reminiscent of a reproductive part of the body, containing something precious. A taboo object that is vulnerable, intimate and at the same time strong and authoritative. Installed within the tower Lajja Gauri has become its hearth, its “belly”.

Les Gardiennes/The Guardians

Solo exhibition in Chapelle de la Charité, arles (F)

The artist was invited by the Hôtel Jules César to compose an exhibition on the theme ‘Sacral Totem’ in the Chapelle de la Charité as well as in the gardens and on the terraces of the hotel.  Charged with ancestral symbolism, her totemic female Guardians resonate with this place which was imagined and created by strong and determined women, the Carmelites in 1634.

Vessel of Fertility - Becoming

selected by the Eco Feminism Festival

The earth element is represented in the clay vessel which forms a part of the installation for The EcoFeminism Festival in London October 2021. It carries motifs of the fertility myths, and honours the goddess of life, death and regeneration. Do you recognise the snake dividing the plate in the middle, splitting the cells and originating new growth?

Geometry of sacredness

project of residency at Guy Bareff Atelier

The third sculpture Ambeth has joined Borbeth and Wilbeth and completes the trio of the Earth Goddesses in a new series called ‘The Geometry of Sacredness’. I have dedicated the months of May, June and September 2021 to this project, that has been forming in my mind over a year now. It is with nostalgia that on 28th September I made the last touches to my three goddesses and offering bowls, which marked the end of my residency with Guy @bareff_The work will now dry completely and be fired in the kiln in a few weeks time.It has been an incredible rich and transformative time.

Dog Love

selected by the British Society of Portrait Sculptors for the annual exhibition Face2021 in May

The artist who in her main practice explores abstracted totemic forms nourished by comparative mythology keeps returning to traditional portrait studies of humans and animals. Uta grew up on a modern farm in the 'Soester Boerde' in Westphalia, Germany  and her daily work with hunting dogs in her youth has sharpened her observation of the psyche and anatomy of these noble animals. Her portraits in bronze and three-dimensional wire sculptures always start with detailed drawing studies. Her recently completed bronze portrait of a Hungarian Vizsla was selected by the prestigious Society of British Portrait Sculptors for their annual exhibition in May.

It is being sold as a limited edition of 9. The edition is for sale at studio price until the end of June 2021.

Please contact Uta by phone or email if you would like more information.

VENUS MATERNITY

Reflections on fertility and the cycle of life

My work is characterised by reflections on the dichotomy of masculinity and femininity, chaos and order, the attempt of human dominance over nature and the possible existence of an invisible parallel world.

Venus Maternity is part of a triptych, which developed from observing organic form and studying fertility cults and sacred objects.

Fortuna et Virtu

Reflecting on Shakespeare's play A Midsummer Night's Dream,  I am creating a sculpture that incorporates its main themes and motifs. My work in general is characterised by reflections on the dichotomy of masculinity and femininity, chaos and order, the attempt of human dominance over nature and the possible existence of an invisible parallel world.
The work Fortuna et Virtu is a structure in wrought iron, with deer antlers on one side and an amber-coloured glass sphere on the opposite side. Similar to the playground feature the ends can tip to one side or the other. The whole recalls a forest animal with blurry contours. It could be a four-legged mammal; it could be an insect. It could be a dreamlike appearance, gone in the next blink of the eye.

iCula ni bokola

A Totemic Guardian

The majestic verticality of iCula ni bokola reminds us of the presence of man or a divinity, the four legs the existence of the animal reign. The sceptre and the presence of a cathedral vault below the figure conceptualise a theology of patriarchal domination over a feminized nature. The creative imagination is born of the unconscious, the magic and the mysterious.

Wandering

Viewed from the front, Wandering stands erect, still and powerful, a totemic Guardian of its beautiful settings. Approached from the side, the female-like figure seems to move forward purposefully with a gliding elegance and grace which belies the humble origin of its form.
The artist's inspiration come from natural material and discarded working tools, in which she finds dignity and anthropomorphic qualities. The thoughtfully and beautifully designed original object which inspired the 2,50 m high sculpture is an old metal saw set tool, used to tune and sharpen saw blades.

Deer theme

In Northern European Folklore animals are believed to be endowed with supernatural powers and the deer - stag or hind - was considered to be a mystical guardian of the forest. According to Celtic myth, Otherworld deities sent a white hind or stag to guide chosen humans into their realm. They were believed to appear to humans at the beginning of a change or a journey...

One and Three

‘One and Three’ consists of a series of metal sculptures, carefully constructed from a number of identical shapes which are originally based on the human body. The whole, however calls to mind a very different image: a flower, a flame, a symbol, a rhythm. One thing can be three. Three things can be one. Nothing is definite.

Drawing in Space

The series of wire sculptures representing the dog developed from experimentation to simplify the artist’s intervention. These three dimensional drawings in space are the result of intensive observation in order to render the complexity and vivacity of the animal by the simplest means.
